In 2004-2007 GVA for film and video totalled £1,876 million; production accounted for 65%, distribution 25% and exhibition 10%. The resent increase of 97% in the industry has created high economic growth and exchange.

Shape of the Film Industry 

The working arrangement of the film workforce varies considerably by sub-sector; 88% of film production crew are freelance and just 22% are employees, whereas all of cinema exhibition and film distribution are employees.

Overall representation of women in film stand at 45% which is greater than representation across the rest of the creative media industry 40% and more in line with the wider economy where women make up 48% of workforce.

Representation vary by sub-sector from over two fifths in film production (62%) and film distribution (30%) cinema exhibition (8%).

The average age of the workforce in film production is 32 years .The workforce is on average slightly younger than for the rest of the creative media industries; As is the case for the  creative media workforce, film production crew are on average younger than the workforce across the whole economy where 62% is 35 years or older.

Three fifths (52%) of film production crew is married or living with someone as a coupled and the rest are single, divorced or widowed. The marital status of the industry is similar to that of the creative media workface as a whole.

Almost six in ten (48%) film production crew has a dependent child less than 16 years living with them and (25%) has a dependent child under 16 years not living with them. The phenomenon varies by gender and more men than women have a dependent child less than 16 years living with them (52% compared with 25%). The experience in film industry is similar to that of the wider creative media workforce where half (48%) of the workforce has a dependent child under 16 years and this is the case for more men then women (40% compare to 28%), including film production, performers, photo imaging and comedians. The experience is dissimilar however to the experience across other business sector and economy where three fifths (75%) of the workforce have dependent child under the age of 16 years and this dose not vary by gender.
